Inspiration

Statistics show that in 2019 466 million people worldwide were diagnosed with hearing disability, 34 million of the diagnosed were children (Source: WHO).
In 2017 it was reported that 4% of people in UAE live with impaired hearing (Source: Gulf News), and only 4 out of the 12 biggest universities in UAE provides limited education for deaf students, with only one university that provides education for all offered majors with the help of a sign language tutor.
We have also contacted Sharjah City for humanitarian Services, who confirmed these limitations and endorsed our innovative approach.

History

The journey of EchoV started in 2018 with the intention of developing a reliable device that will help hearing-impaired patients in their education. The first design included a hearing aid (bone conduction glasses) linked with the smartphone. However, this design faced latency problems since communication between the glasses and the smartphone was mandatory for signal processing.
The second design was completely modified to overcome the faced problems, by introducing AR glasses that will communicate with the patients visually (hence the name Echo Vision “EchoV”). The software prototype was primarily built for an affordable AR glasses (MadGaze X5) available in the market, then we developed an expansion that includes Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) microphones surrounding the glasses to identify the location of each incoming sounds. The microphones will work as an array and will communicate with the glasses to do the signal processing on-board, without the need of an external device.

Speech Emotion Recognition

Identify the emotional state of the person talking from their voice and will be projected using emojis on the AR glasses

Environmental Sounds Indication

Identifying surrounding sounds patterns such as broken glass sound, car horn, or even gunshot sounds
